The Michigan Municipal League (MML)’s PlacePlans program is focused on assisting Michigan communities in placemaking. MML and the City of Kalamazoo tapped LSL Planning to help promote alternatives to vehicle travel for the “Healthy Living Campus” that includes a new medical school, hospital, new community college culinary arts institute, and a farmer's market on the edge of downtown.

We worked with a stakeholder committee and developed a concept plan and action program including the following:

• Travel Demand Management incentives and employer programs
• Bicycle facilities including bike parking, routes, and potential bike share
• “Pedestrian First” street designs and new connections
• A road diet along Portage Street as an entry to the campus and to help revitalize a mature commercial district.
