Transit & Streetcar Plan, Grand Rapids, MI

Transit Master Plan

LSL Planning worked with the Grand Rapids metropolitan region’s transit provider, The Rapid, to develop a comprehensive 20-year Transit Master Plan (TMP). The outcome was a long term vision for regional transit service to meet current and future conditions needs of the six member municipalities.

Public involvement was a critical element to ensure the TMP was embraced by the community and truly became the “People’s Plan,” reflecting the needs of each participating community within the context of a regional vision. A blending of multiple media and meeting formats engaged stakeholders, transit users, and the public including an email list of over 3,000 stakeholder organizations and individuals.

Silver Line BRT

LSL Planning next was part of the team engaged in implementing one of the key recommendations of the plan – establishing Michigan’s first bus rapid transit (BRT) route (The Silver Line). We assisted with frequent communications with property owners during the design and construction phase. The project, currently under construction, will be fully operational in 2014.

Streetcar Feasibility

Currently, we are involved in a feasibility study for the downtown Grand Rapids streetcar that was recommended in the TMP. We are assisting an Advisory Committee in the evaluation of route alternatives, TOD opportunities, and station locations.
